Greetings,
I am creating a new course this fall for the Honors Program called "Deep Time: the Science of Origins". This is the first of a series of new Honors Core courses - broad divisional courses intended to enrich the liberal arts experience of honors students.
This course will explore what science has learned about the origin of everything - the Earth, life on it, and the cosmos. The approach will be historical, following the development of origin science from the 1780's to today. We will read extensively from the original work of leading scientists, and expose students to the interplay of geology, biology, chemistry, and physics. I've attached a more extended description.
I'm looking to recruit one GSI (with a full 0.5 appointment) to work with me on this class.
The ideal person would have a bit of teaching experience and the courage required to work in a really new course like this. I think it will be an excellent opportunity for someone interested in perhaps one day teaching in a liberal arts college. It's not necessary that they should have much prior knowledge of the history or content of this origin science: any good graduate students should be able to work well with honors freshmen on this class.
I know it's late, and many people are already committed, but if you have names to suggest or a list I could circulate this to, I'd appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks,
Tim
