Call for Students Applications
Scaling Up: Future of Environmental Decisions (FED): A Student Workshop

ESA’s Office of Education & Diversity Programs is pleased to announce the Call for Applications for the student workshop, “Scaling Up: Future of Environmental Decisions (FED)”, made possible by funding from the National Science Foundation.

This six-day interactive workshop will use a case study of the Chesapeake Bay to explore the ecological and socioeconomic dimensions of decision-making using data at the regional and continental-scale. Participants will explore geospatial datasets; develop GIS analysis skills; build science communications skills and explore careers that involve Big Data in environmental and related disciplines.

Opportunity: Up to 25 awards of travel, lodging, and subsistence support to attend the workshop.

Eligibility: Current and recently graduated undergraduate students as well as current Graduate students from any academic discipline – including social, natural, formal and applied science fields – are invited to participate. Underrepresented minority students are especially encouraged to apply.

How to submit an application

Application deadline: Friday, February 8^th, 2013; 5:00pm Eastern

Applicants must submit an online application, which requests academic information, a description of relevant course work, extracurricular activities and a personal statement. The workshop committee will select participants to ensure an appropriate mix of disciplines and backgrounds. Prior GIS experience is not required. Applications will be notified of their acceptance status by Mid-March.
