AAAS: Center for Public Engagement with Science & Technology

With the new year, the AAAS Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology is excited to share new and updated programs that we think you'll be interested in. Read on to find out about opportunities for individuals to enroll in our Communicating Science Workshops, how to join us online for our annual Communicating Science Seminar, how our AAAS Leshner Fellows are building capacity for public engagement, and more!

AAAS Communicating Science Workshops

In 2020, we debuted virtual versions of our popular #SciEngage/#SciComm workshops - and now individuals can register, too!

Interested? Join us on Wednesday, January 13, from 1-4 pm ET for Science Communication and Public Engagement Fundamentals!

Registration ($125): https://attendee.gototraining.com/r/5220847757741835778

The introductory-level, three-hour Science Communication and Public Engagement Fundamentals module introduces scientists and engineers to the latest science communication research and basic best practices for engaging with the public. Participants are introduced to the AAAS Framework for Public Engagement (pictured above) which can help them develop individual plans that include a public engagement goal and address ways to engage a relevant audience with tailored messages. Through instruction, discussion, self-reflection & structured exercises that emphasize two-way dialogue, participants brainstorm an engagement scenario and identify next steps to put their plans into action.

This workshop is designed for scientists and engineers who don’t have much experience with public engagement, although experienced engagers may find it useful.

Can't make our January workshop? No worries, we'll also host sessions in February and March (with more dates to be announced soon):

Leshner Leadership Institute for Public Engagement with Science
The Leshner Leadership Institute for Public Engagement with Science is celebrating five years of empowering cohorts of scientists and engineers working at the intersection of science and society. Leshner Fellows have engaged tens of thousands of people and built public engagement capacity within their scientific institutions, disciplines, networks, and communities. Check out the Faces of the Fellowship to learn more and review highlights of past fellows' public engagement activities.

Beginning this year and through spring 2022, AAAS will be developing and disseminating lessons learned from the program, particularly on institutional change, and on the challenges and opportunities for public engagement arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and from efforts to address structural racism in science and science engagement.
