German for Reading Knowledge is an intensive course designed for students who are preparing for departmental reading exams and/or need to read German for their research. The course is conducted mostly in English in a fun, friendly and stress-free classroom atmosphere. In this course, students acquire a foundational reading vocabulary, a basic knowledge of grammatical structures, and a thorough understanding of German grammar. There is an additional focus on proper translation practices from German into English. Upon successful completion, students will be reading texts of different difficulty with the help of a dictionary. They will be able to understand the main arguments of a text and analyze the logic of each argumentation.
Here are a few comments from students who took this class:
Lots of opportunity for individualized attention
German is not easy for me, but (the instructor) was very patient, answered questions, and really helped me understand the material. The assignments and the structure of the class were really useful and I feel that I have been set up well to continue doing German translations on my own. She also gave us lots of resources for independent work.
The instruction and the assignments were all fantastic.
Can't say enough good about Shubhangi. She is simply an excellent instructor and I truly enjoyed every minute of this class. She cultivated a good ambiance in class, was patient and compassionate, and was always willing to help.
