ELI Spring Seminars for Current U-M Graduate Students

NEW for Spring 2020

ELI Spring Seminars

Open to current U-M Graduate Students (Non-Credit)

In order to provide ongoing language instruction and practice to currently enrolled U-M graduate students wherever they are located during this time of remote study, the English Language Institute is offering two new, online seminars.

Seminar materials and activities will be delivered asynchronously. This means that you can complete activities and assignments according to your own schedule, at any time during the week, no matter what time zone you are in, as long as you meet weekly deadlines. Optional synchronous meetings will provide opportunities to interact with your instructors and classmates in real-time.

We are offering two seminars for spring 2020. Each lasts six weeks, June 1–July 10, and entails a weekly time commitment of approximately 4 hours per week. Each seminar is limited to 15 participants in order to maximize opportunities for practice and feedback. The course fee for each seminar is $490.

Spring Seminar: Introduction to Academic Writing

This online non-credit spring offering from the English Language Institute (ELI) introduces you to some of the important organizational patterns and strategies graduate students must master in order to become more confident, effective writers.

In this seminar, you will practice academic writing in a variety of online activities, such as discussions, collaborative writing, and online versions of class activities in our textbook. You will write three short papers, respond to other students’ writing in peer reviews, and revise your papers in response to teacher and peer feedback. At the end of the seminar, you will receive personalized advising on future ELI courses that might be of benefit to you.

Spring Seminar: Introduction to Academic Speaking

This seminar is designed to provide engaged, active speaking and listening practice to help you become a more confident and effective speaker in academic and professional settings.

In this seminar, you will explore and practice academic communication through online activities that include developing small talk skills, crafting an elevator pitch, and giving brief informal presentations. You will improve your speaking fluency and ability to smoothly deliver prepared talks. You will also expand your range of vocabulary and useful set expressions. At the end of the seminar, you will receive personalized advising on future ELI courses that may be of benefit to you.
