About
The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships provide opportunities for PhD candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in less commonly taught modern foreign languages and non-Western-European area studies. The fellowship supports international travel to and from country of research; maintenance and dependent(s) allowance based on the location of research; an allowance for research-related expenses overseas; and health and accident insurance premium. Fellowship period is no less than six months and no more than twelve months.

Eligibility
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • Currently enrolled as a PhD student in good standing at U-M
  • Be advanced to PhD candidacy by the beginning of fellowship period
  • Planning a teaching career in the United States upon completion of the PhD
  • Sufficient foreign language skills to carry out proposed dissertation research project

PhD students should express their interest in applying for this fellowship by completing the Declaration of Intent to Apply Form online here and then schedule an advising meeting with the DDRA Program Advisor to discuss their dissertation project and application requirements.

Anticipated Competition Timetable
Next round of competition will be for the FY2020 award cycle, which enables PhD students to engage in 6-12 months of uninterrupted full-time in-country fieldwork between December 2020 and March 2022. US Department of Education (US/ED) has not announced the competition timetable for FY2020 awards. Based on past years, we anticipate the competition timetable to be approximately as follows; however, actual competition dates may differ significantly.
  • Late January 2020: US/ED issues Notice Inviting Applications (call for applications)
  • Late February 2020: U-M campus application deadline for student applications
  • March 2020: US/ED final application deadline for U-M institutional application
