Campus Events: Free Speech, Hate Speech, and an Inclusive Campus

LSA is providing co-sponsorship of two events this week in the contentious space around free speech, hate speech, and the struggle for an inclusive campus (and national) climate: the talk by NYT columnist Bret Stephenson on "Free Speech and the Necessity of Discomfort" on Tuesday, February 20, hosted by the Wallace House; and "Disrupting White Supremacy: Global Histories and Local Struggles", a Teach-In organized by the LSA History Department on Wednesday, February 21. Both events, which will be live streamed, offer our campus community the opportunity to think, talk and reflect on these issues across a broad spectrum of perspectives and positions.
We hope to capture and preserve some of this activity in the LSA Blog: LearnSpeakAct, which is currently seeking contributions, as noted below.

Seeking Contributors for LearnSpeakAct, the LSA Blog

LearnSpeakAct, the blog hosted by the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, is seeking contributors for blog posts on issues that affect our campus community.
Launched in Winter 2017, LearnSpeakAct features concise and accessible posts that draw on the wide-ranging expertise of our intellectual community. The blog provides a virtual community to respond to and reflect on social, cultural, and political issues during this tumultuous moment both nationally and internationally.
Past blog posts have commented on the campaign to rename the C.C. Little building, the global refugee crisis, and a recent campus visit from Charles Murray. We would especially welcome pieces that comment on the history of white supremacy, academic freedom, science and society, and debates over free speech and inclusion. LearnSpeakAct also provides a platform to document events on campus, such as the U-M Bicentennial, and going forward, with posts that engage LSA Theme Semesters.
Faculty, students, and staff in LSA are all invited to submit proposals. Email Graduate Student Coordinator, Molly Brookfield at mmbrook@umich.edu to discuss your proposed topic and the process for submitting a post.
