January 21st through February 15th marks the dates of the Face-Off Blood Challenge between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. This competition extends the in-state athletic rivalry as students, faculty, and staff donate pints to save lives. If you have never given blood, please consider making a donation, and if you are a loyal donor, this would be a great time to give the gift of life once again.
There is an ongoing national crisis; blood supply reserves have reached their lowest levels of the last 15 years. There has rarely been a better time for Face Off's annual blood collection effort. During last year's Face Off against Michigan State, the Wolverines collected 1,281 pints, and, in total, enough blood was collected to possibly benefit over 7,500 people.
The Red Cross often finds it difficult to meet hospitals' needs for blood, especially during the winter months. At this time, the supplies of all blood types are low and the Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donors. Blood is needed constantly, whether it is for children with sickle cell anemia, trauma victims, selected surgeries, or chemotherapy.
You can make a difference! One donation has the potential to save up to three lives. By donating, you help to ensure that local blood supply needs are met. Signing up is easy. If you visit the website www.redcrossblood.org
To celebrate the competition and to thank those who seek to save lives and propel Michigan towards victory, the American Red Cross will provide those who attend our Monday drives with an American Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last. Additionally, donors who schedule an appointment ahead of time will receive a Face Off wristband at all drive locations, while supplies last.
We want to acknowledge that, due to Red Cross blood donation eligibility requirements and other factors, not everyone will be able to donate. However, there are other ways to raise awareness of the need for blood donation, and we encourage you to be supportive in any way that you can. For more information on blood donation eligibility requirements and other ways to contribute, please visit the American Red Cross website.

Please eat iron rich foods and drink plenty of water before you donate blood! Thank you for giving the gift of life. Bleed MAIZE and BLUE to beat MSU!
