Other (looking for volunteers)

Hello all!

The Great Lakes Bowl, an annual, regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, is coming once again to the University of Michigan! NOSB is a nationwide event that encompasses 25 regions from around the country that host teams of high school students in a competition to test student knowledge of ocean and Great Lakes sciences.  Regional winners advance to the finals competition, which will be held in Milwaukee this year. Our regional competition of 16 high school teams will be held at the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment onSaturday, February 9, 2013 from 8am to approximately 4:30pm

We are seeking volunteers to help with our regional competition.  We need officials for each room, which include:

Moderators
Science Judges
Rules Judges
Scorekeepers
Timekeepers
Runners

We will also need:
Team Challenge Question Scorers
Hospitality Staff
Set-up Crew (starting Fri. evening before and/or early that Sat. morning)
Take-down Crew (starting immediately after the final rounds on Sat)

The competition runs from 8:00 am until around 4:30 pm (volunteers will need to arrive in advance of competition start time). You can volunteer to help with all or a portion of the day.  For your hard work you will receive a t-shirt, breakfast, lunch, and a great opportunity to meet and interact with some very enthusiastic students!  For more information on the National Ocean Sciences Bowl program, visit their web site: www.nosb.org.  Our regional information can be found at:http://www.miseagrant.umich.edu/education/nosb/ You can also like us on facebook or follow us on twitter @GreatLakesBowl 2013 for more information.

There will be four available practice sessions for volunteers, one at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL), and three at the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE). Each session will include an overview of the competition format and rules, as well as a practice buzzer rounds. NOSB requires that all volunteers attend at least one practice session, but you are welcome to come to as many as you would like. For new volunteers, or volunteers in new roles, it may be helpful to attend two sessions to ensure that everything runs smoothly on competition day.
(Note: These training are not required for Team Challenge Question graders, set-up/take-down crews or hospitality volunteers)

Thursday, January 17
12:00-1:30pm at GLERL (please bring your own lunch)
5:30-7:00pm at SNRE, room 1028 (food will be provided)

Monday, January 28
11:30-1:00pm at SNRE, room 2024 (please bring your own lunch)
5:30-7:00pm at SNRE, room 2024 (food will be provided)

Please sign up before Jan 9 (earlier sign-ups mean fewer emails from me asking for more volunteers!) using this Google Doc, and include the following information

1) Your name, affiliation, and email address
2) Which training session(s) you will attend. I highly recommend attending two sessions, especially for new volunteers.
3) Which role or roles you would like (Depending on availability, I may not be able to accommodate all requests)
4) Any time restraints you may have (morning-only, etc)

Please help us by forwarding this to other members of your organization, or anyone else who may be interested. We typically have a great turnout of repeat volunteers, but are always looking to increase our visibility and encourage new volunteers to participate.

I have attached a quick overview of the competition rules, as well as information on the volunteer roles.

Thank you very much and I look forward to working with you to ensure another great year of competition for the students! Please feel free to contact me (mlyn@umich.edu) with any questions regarding the Bowl.
