Parallels between cancer metastasis and invasive species:  Implications for research and treatment

Abstract: Cancer tumorigenesis and metastasis are best understood in terms of evolutionary biology and ecology. Cancer cells and host cells cooperate to promote cancer growth  in the primary tumor as well at metastatic sites, eventually creating metacommunities within the host patient biosphere.  Understanding these processes in terms of evolution and ecology have opened new avenues of treatment.

He is a two-time American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor Award recipient, and Director of Experimental Therapeutics for the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology. He is on the faculty of the Cellular and Molecular Biology, Computational Medicine and Biology, and Cancer Biology graduate programs and is a scholar of the Taubman Research Institute at the University of Michigan
