Faculty position

The Biology Department at Lewis & Clark College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in biology to begin Fall 2013; we are willing to consider an appointment at a higher rank for candidates with appropriate experience. Candidates should be committed to excellent teaching and to developing a productive, externally-funded research program involving undergraduates. We seek a colleague with the experience to help us meet our commitment to provide science students from diverse backgrounds with outstanding teaching and mentoring. We invite applications from candidates who can help us achieve this goal, especially those with expertise in any of these areas: genomics, bioinformatics, immunology, physiology, endocrinology, developmental or cell/molecular biology. The successful candidate will teach five semester-long lecture or lab courses each academic year. These courses will include one or more upper division courses in fields related to their specialty, participation in introductory biology, and contributions to the College’s general education program. Ph.D. required, postdoctoral experience preferred.

The College currently lacks PHS certification for the care and use of mammals in research, so candidates who study microbes, plants, or non-mammalian animals are preferred. Please submit application materials via Interfolio (https://secure.interfolio.com/apply/14070; click on “apply” to create a free account). Materials should include: letter of application; curriculum vitae; description of research plans; description of teaching/mentoring experience,
interests and philosophy; graduate transcripts (unofficial copies are fine); names and contact information for three individuals who will provide letters of recommendation; and representative reprints. Letters of application should clearly address how the candidate’s teaching/research interests and experiences would contribute both to the Biology Department’s program and to the College’s commitment to cultivate diversity in the learning community. Recommenders will be invited to submit their letters via Interfolio. We encourage interested candidates to submit their applications by November 1, 2012; we will review applications as soon as we receive them, and will continue accepting applications until the position is filled. The College conducts background checks on finalists for all positions.
