2- The EEB Graduate Affairs Committee is soliciting applications for HHMI’s three-year fellowship program, which supports outstanding international Ph.D. students studying in the United States who are ineligible for fellowships or training grants through U.S. federal agencies.
3- The GAC would like to solicit applications for the Dow Sustainability Fellows Program for exceptional Masters and Professional-Degree students focused on interdisciplinary sustainabilty. The program aspires to prepare future sustainability leaders to make a positive difference in organizations worldwide. Each cohort begins in January and concludes in December of that year. This component of the Dow program is designed for U-M students who arepursuing a terminal masters or other professional degree—with a focus on finding interdisciplinary, actionable, and meaningful solutions to sustainability solutions on local-to-global scales. Only students who are nominated by their school/college may apply.

Eligibility
Application submission is open to international students, enrolled full-time in the University of Michigan, who are in years two or three of a Ph.D. program. The award supports years three, four, and five of a Ph.D. program. Eligible fields include life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science and psychology. A student does not need to be working with an HHMI Investigator to be eligible.
Eligible students:
- are studying in the life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science or psychology;
- have demonstrated exceptional talent for research;
- are in the second (or third) year of doctoral study;
- have entered a laboratory in which they will conduct their dissertation research, and
- are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
Deadline
Application materials must be submitted in pdf form to Jane Sullivan (janesull@umich.edu) in the EEB Grad Office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 19th. Applications will be reviewed by the GAC and selected candidates will be forward to Rackham for consideration.
Award Description
HHMI expects to fund up to 40 fellowships from several host institutions. Each fellow will receive an annual stipend of $30,000, plus an educational allowance for three years.
Required Application Materials
- a one-page statement from the nominee describing his/her research, future goals and timetable for completion
- the nominee’s current curriculum vitae (c.v.);
- a letter of no more than two pages from the nominee’s faculty advisor

In addition to receiving valuable monetary support for their studies, Dow Sustainability Fellows become part of a“Community of Scholars” who regularly interact to exchange ideas and perspectives. In fact, as part of an effort to encourage interdiscipinary thinking and collaboration, fellows are required to engage in monthly seminars and related activities, as well as a multidisciplinary team project.
Each year, a total of 40 masters/professional-degree students will be selected for this Dow Sustainability Fellows Program, each of whom will receive up to $20,000 to help support his/her studies. They will also be eligible to compete for a Distinguished Award for Interdisciplinary Sustainability valued up to $75,000 to be used to implement a team project.

· 1) a written statement (800 words max) that draws on specific examples and addresses the following:
* How your past experience, current studies, and career objectives relate to sustainability, transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, and demonstrate leadership.
* What you seek to gain from the program and how it will enhance your ability to pursue and engage in impactful sustainability work.
* How you have played an integral role in moving a project (not necessarily sustainability related) from conceptualization through implementation, and the important lessons you learned.
* What skills and experience you would bring to the program in general and to your project team in particular
In addition - If you have an idea for an interdisciplinary project you would like to explore through the fellowship program, please describe it here and indicate what additional skills and experience would be needed from other fellows to ensure success of the project.
