With an emphasis on the professional development of graduate students and post-docs in STEM- related disciplines. “Understanding Implicit Bias: The Largest Roadblock for the Global STEM Workforce” is a workshop that serves to provide cultural competency and implicit bias training in developing the next generation of STEM professionals in the global workforce. Attendees will:
• Learn how the unconscious mind works through the use demonstrations of perceptual and cognitive illusions
• Discover how this applies to the perception of others and translates to social judgements through research evidence
• Gain useful techniques on how to mitigate implicit bias when presented
• Discover how this applies to the perception of others and translates to social judgements through research evidence

This workshop will be facilitated by Calvin K. Lai, PhD from the Department of Psychology and Project Implicit at Harvard University. His research seeks to reconcile our values with our action by finding the most effective strategies for addressing implicit biases. He does this by studying the unconscious mind through: discovering malleability of implicit association, identifying stability of implicit associations over time, and illustrating the relationship between implicit associations and behavior.
