The Genome Science Training Program (GSTP) at the University of Michigan provides support for pre- and post-doctoral training at the interface of the quantitative sciences (primarily statistics) and genetics (primarily human genetics) under support from the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
Since its inception in 1995, the Program has supported 95 trainees, and is supporting 13 during the 2016-2017 academic year. In contrast to past years when training focused almost exclusively on pre-doctoral trainees, this year we hope to support both pre- and post-doctoral trainees. Training support typically is guaranteed for two years, with the option to re-compete for a third year of support. United States citizens and permanent residents are eligible for support.
Pre-doctoral trainees can be new applicants to a relevant University of Michigan graduate program (including Bioinformatics; Biostatistics; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Epidemiology; Human Genetics; Mathematics; Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology; and Statistics) or continuing Michigan students at any stage in their graduate studies. Pre-doctoral trainees are expected to undertake a core curriculum of the Training Program, which is described in the handbook on page 7 at https://sph.umich.edu/csg/gstp
Post-doctoral trainees should hold a doctoral degree prior to entering the training program and a desire to pursue one of more of these areas of study with a University of Michigan faculty member.
Pre-doctoral trainees are provided with full tuition (two semesters) and a stipend ($23,376 in 2016-2017). Post-doctoral trainees receive the standard NIH stipend level which is based on years of post-doctoral experience. Trainees also receive travel funds towards attendance at a scientific meeting.
Trainees who are not eligible or not chosen to be financially supported by the program may still be offered training program trainee member status. Trainee members are welcome (and expected) to complete training program core courses and to participate in training program activities, including journals clubs, seminars, and retreats.
Applications and nominations for training program funding and/or membership are due March 1, 2017, and should include: CV, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, GRE scores, three letters of recommendation from undergraduate or graduate faculty or research mentors, and a statement of research interests, experience, and training goals. The statement should make clear the interdisciplinary nature of the applicant's interests and willingness to complete program requirements. Application information should be sent to:
