A Science Comedian’s Guide to Communicating Science to the Public: Lunchtime Training Session

Learn from experienced communicator and comedian, Brian Malow, on how to present your science and give a public talk to a general or lay audience. In this fast-paced workshop, you will learn how to improve your presentation skills in a variety of forums, from in-person to video. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to attend an intensive and fun training with this well-known communication specialist and comedian. You will leave with great ideas, unique insights and an improved skill-set (and a free lunch!)

  • Improving verbal and non-verbal communications skills
  • Use (or over use!) of science jargon
  • Effectively employing humor (even if you think you are not funny)
  • Understanding and connecting with your audience
  • Using (and abusing) PowerPoint
  • The relative ease of creating a science communication video
  • Using social media
Brian Malow is Earth’s Premier Science Comedian (self-proclaimed). He has performed for NSF, AAAS, JPL, NIST, ACS, AGU – and many other acronyms. Brian has made science videos for Time Magazine’s website, blogged for Scientific American, and is a contributor to Neil deGrasse Tyson’s radio show. He gives workshops and presentations to train scientists to become better speakers. He’s been featured on The Late Late Showwith Craig Ferguson, co-hosted shows on The Weather Channel, and been profiled in Nature, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.
Brian currently works in science communication for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.
